Bajwa Calls on Election Commission to Postpone Byelections in Punjab

  • | Saturday | 19th October, 2024

Senior Congress leader and the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday formally requested the Election Commission of India to reschedule the byelections for four Assembly seats, originally set for November 13, 2024. The appeal comes in light of the imminent birth anniversary of Sikhs first master Guru Nanak Dev, the esteemed founder of Sikhism, celebrated on November 15, 2024.   Bajwa, in his letter, underscored the significant religious and cultural importance of this period for the people of Punjab, especially in Dera Baba Nanak, a town intimately connected to the legacy of Guru Nanak. He pointed out that the celebrations span three days, commencing with the sacred akhand path on the day of the byelections, potentially hindering voter participation.   Bajwa emphasized that families will be engaged in religious observances in Gurudwaras and at home, which could adversely impact their ability to partake in the electoral process. The Election Commission has previously shown sensitivity to the cultural sentiments of various communities, as demonstrated by the recent adjustment of Haryana Assembly elections to accommodate a significant Bishnoi festival. I urge the Commission to extend similar consideration to the Sikh community and the people of Punjab by postponing the byelections to a date after November 15, 2024, he stated.   Highlighting the religious significance of Dera Baba Nanak, which hosts historic Gurudwaras such as Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Chola Sahib, Bajwa noted the towns status as a pilgrimage site for Sikhs worldwide. He reiterated the need for voters to fully engage in both their religious festivities and the democratic process without conflict.   Expressing optimism that the Election Commission will heed his request, Bajwa emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values while honouring the deeply rooted religious sentiments of millions in Punjab.
